Armed with a stove and station wagon, coupled with passion and knowledge of
cooking Southern Soul Food and Caribbean cuisine, Bennett Caterers was born.
Catering to a very diverse population in greater Hartford in 1963, Eva Mae
Bennett was very resourceful with her Home Economics background. Limited
opportunities in the segregated south forced Eva Mae to work as a domestic. The
Jewish families that employed her taught her the art and traditions in the
preparation and cooking of kosher meals. Kenneth Bennett, who was no stranger
to hard work, soon became employee number two at Bennett Caterers. He had been
working in the fields of Jamaica. His cooking skills and knowledge of Jamaican
and other Caribbean fair expanded their client base as well as the menu.
The breakthrough year, 1973, was the year it all changed. All 9 of their children
were employed in the family's thriving business. The endless strive for
perfection at all catering events had begun. By 1983, Bennett Caterers had
cemented one of the best catering reputations in the greater Hartford area; in
the same year, Joanne graduated from Howard University. Following graduation
from Howard and began working at an insurance company, but Joanne’s personal
fulfillment eluded her. Having that burning desire of cooking in her heart,
Joanne resigned and Bennett Caterers of Washington D.C. was formed. Bennett
Caterers has served the D.C Metro area for more than twenty five years. Working
with Chefs from five different continents and seven countries. Many in the
nation's capital rank Bennett Caterers as one of the best International caterers
in the DC Metro Area.
